PIHAPALAPELI -  a concept for particitopary design in public space

Pihapalapeli is a concept for particitopary design in the urban setting. The concept is based on the idea that design procesess in public spaces should include user participation in order to be sustainable.

Pihapalapeli is a series of pieces of prototype furniture, which can be used to develop a common yard in cooperation with residents and to start the process of developing the space. This interactive intervention helps to brings different individuals' viewpoints regarding the common space into open discussion. It also functions as a design tool, which helps
in the practical design of the yard - through it we can come to understand the space and its different uses.

The site of the project are the empty, unused yards - spaces in between - which are valuable and potentially meaningfull spaces within the city. My thesis suggests that the yards could be developed into a common and interactive environment that acts as an extension of the home-space. My thesis states that a good yard
can add to the value of living in a city.

My thesis is also about extending the role of the designer beyond product-centered design to public space and common experience. It is a model of process-based design, where the designers´r role is of an organizer and director. The result of the process is immaterial; a new model for action or thinking, instead of a new product.

The thesis project was awarded by the company SATO in MOA exhibition. Read more...
